Roll On 03:56
Mama said you gotta find another lover Daddy shook his head, said you'll never recover A broken heart is like an oil sheen Roll on, love Roll on I'm a Mississippi chicken when it comes to lovers to get outta this state I gotta fire the Governor Now I float down the river like an oil sheen Roll on, love Roll on Roll on, love Roll on Roll on, love Roll on Girl at the station got a lovely number pale blue eyes and the sweetest mother Her first wet kiss made my river run clean Roll on, love Roll on Roll on, love Roll on She’s a Mississippi queen I can’t win lover rode the river and then fell in I thought I could fly, but I can't even swim Hold on, boy Hold on Hold on Hold on Mama said you gotta find another lover she put oil your heart, you don't get another It's just me and the river now, thick as thieves Roll on, love Roll on Roll on, love Roll on Roll on, love Roll on She's a pretty flower of the Veiux Carre now Feeling frisky from the whiskey getting carried away now Just hitting her stride when she lost her feet ‘Cause she drank too much of the river's sheen Roll on, love Roll on Roll on, love Roll on Roll on, love Roll on © 2016 Words and Music by Nicholas D. Love 04:13
Oh come cut away the stories of my stumbles and my old affairs because my baby left me and I wanna take it out on my hair Shake these worries to the ground to be swept up in my rearview ‘cause what I thought I was for when I was four on the floor is true Love comes pushing Right through me Your hips have the sway of the gods, won’t you show me the way (oh baby please what’s the answer?) On the pitch and the roll of an ocean that wants to play (oh baby please what’s the answer?) When I’m caught in your fishnets baby I don’t want to be free (oh baby please what’s the matter now?) Theres no worry in my heart anymore I know what I gotta be (oh baby please what’s the answer?) Love comes pushing Right through me Love comes pushing Right through me Hey there little giggle you’re a riddle to me You said I have a vulnerable view But we’ve been messing with the secret dealings of dreams in our heads, I know you know it's true So take a sip of time and a wrinkle of wine And find a new groove you can use As I watch you spinning round me with your head in the sky teasing more, more, more, more You said, “Love is under fire.” I said, “The sun is gonna be my tattoo.” (oh baby we’ve got the answer) My kisses speak in tongues if you don’t understand then what you gonna do? (oh baby we’ve got the answer) I’m on a boreal bender of summertime surrender its true (oh baby we’ve got the answer, now) ‘cause what I thought I was for when I was four on the floor is true (oh baby we’ve got the answer) Love comes pushing Right through me Love comes pushing Right through me © 2016 Words and Music by Nicholas D. Lady Lake 04:51
I can skip a stone until my arm gives out re-living the first coffee that we shared I can freeze my toes and hope the waves return my nerve like when i first said you’re my love, my heart laid bare Oh my lady lake Oh my lady lake your hourglass is keeping the memories we made in a pile underneath the waves Remember the hug you gave me at the end of our first day? You climbed up on a stool to make it fair I didn’t want to hurt you with the fondness that I felt but I probably should have kissed you then and there Oh my lady lake Oh my lady lake your hourglass is keeping the memories we made in a pile underneath the waves And so we grow We grew so close then you grew far away And so we grow I can’t get these tears or years to wash away ‘Cause I lost my heart underneath the waves I can throw a hundred stones until the shore runs out recalling how we’d laugh ’til faces creased we could spend all evening just lying on the floor ’til bellies sore from giggling, fall asleep Goodbye lady lake Goodbye lady lake your hourglass has emptied all the plans we made in a pile underneath the waves Goodbye lady lake Your hourglass has emptied all the memories we made in a pile underneath the waves © 2016 Words and Music by Nicholas D. Rivulet 04:48
Caught in a fog couldn't go anywhere (ooo) without enough ballast to fire my flare But across the river she was standing there ooo She waved me over with the palm of her tree (yeah) the fog wouldn’t lift, so she carried me She said the echoes of the ages are swimming here in your eyes If you cry Follow the rivulets Moonlight dancing over this old town riddled with my old scenes Empty as it seems Each day I stumble over love’s old rusted war machines hidden in my routines I met a girl with a long fairy tale (mmm) she lifted my fog as she lifted her veil And lights across the water were dancing in the cool of the night oh across the rivulets So on a whim I took a swim on the song of the sea (yeah) The sweet taste of longing was waiting for me Like a rivulet of wonder that leaves a line down a young lover’s cheek Oh come be the rivulet Come be the rivulet Moonlight come shine over this old town and light up my new scene as I float downstream These eyes may echo the ages but I’m still somewhere between my boots and where my hat makes my roof So I’ll follow the rivulets I’ll follow the rivulets I’ll follow the rivulets © 2016 Words and Music by Nicholas D. How Strange 04:26
I didn’t want to see your face but I’m a picture of perfect contradiction Hello again my love let me offer my benediction I see through fresh-squeezed eyes you’re wearing the new rings of a tree Well I fear that a broken bough is all that I’ve grown to be I’m older than the trunk I climb to reach our memories Where we listened to the song of the wind before you turned to leaves How strange the things that age you Wrinkles where you smile As if laughter took a greater toll Than all the tears you didn’t cry How often do we say goodbye when it really isn’t good? How often do we stand up knowing we won’t be understood? Hello again my love how strange that I used to believe your whispers in the song of the wind before you turned to leaves How strange the things that age you Wrinkles where you smile As if laughter took a greater toll Than all the tears you didn’t cry How strange the things that age us Wrinkles made of wood Sometimes laughter does what memory and tears never could What tears never could © 2016 Words and Music by Nicholas D. The whistling wind Around the edge so thin Where the old sign begs "Forgive" Oh Tell me where did I begin? These feet to this head, and all within But the headlights and horns can't swim And won't take me Like the whistling wind I'm falling I've lost the edge Come take me and carry all the burdens I keep in my head The street shudders beneath my feet and the stars pull their light from my seams The echo of an old choir breathes Right through me On the whistling wind If I'm falling If I've lost the edge Come take me and carry all the burdens i keep in my head With you With you all my worries grow dim Its true It's true I know somehow I will win Against the whistling wind The drummer in my chest is on repeat Those tiny magic arms beat a hearty beat If they tire as my fire grows dim Forgive me © 2016 Words and Music by Nicholas D. Messin' Up 04:23
There’s a four letter word carved in my family tree right in the spot I was dreaming of leaves, but leaves were not to be It’s enough to pickle your mind ohh there’s nothing more fickle than time Ooooo I’m just here messing up Ooooo I’m just here messing up Awoke this morning with an angel sleeping next to me tattooed and so beautiful, wish I could draw my name in her dreams Wasn’t looking to fall in love one more time Maybe I should, maybe I could, if I had half my mind Ooooo I’m just here messing up Ooooo I’m just here messing up Say I’m not falling in love, one more time An old candle flickers in the shadows I know it’s not bright, but at least I can see Ooooo I’m just here messing up Ooooo I’m just here messing up Love and curses to the sky for all these perfect eyes! But memory is sweeter to me now I’ve lost all my nerve where blossoms were meant to be But I just held an angel in my arms, and she fit so gracefully It’s enough to pickle your mind and she carved her name in mine Love and curses to the sky for all these perfect eyes! I thought I had buried this deeply But she flickers like a flame in the gallows And here I thought I was swimming in the shallows Oooooo she is the memory of love and it feels alright Ooooo I’m just here messing up © 2016 Words and Music by Nicholas D, Drummond

Runes 04:29
Come past the edge of quiet between the notes between the words Where a perfect song is playing and for a moment can be heard A faint waltzing my love, a faint waltzing my love Somewhere I want this like color wants the eye Let me read the runes behind the sky So clear Where the quiet reveals the surprise in the starlight chandelier A melody of velvet from a galaxy of dust Come spin the record baby let the sound surround the hush And it’s waltzing my love, it’s waltzing my love Like a big bass drum The mountains the sea and the sun Were pulled from the fire by the sound That says come get down I want this like color wants the eye Let me read the runes behind the sky So clear Where the quiet reveals the surprise in the starlight chandelier A leaping in my chest, under the trees in my summer best, with a fairy queen in sweet July, impress the eye Spinning me way up high in open air Long to be tumbling upwards like a prayer Glory be! I finally found my soul repair Spinning me way up high in open air I want this like color wants the eye Let me read the runes behind the sky So clear Where the quiet reveals the surprise in the starlight chandelier © 2016 Words and Music by Nicholas D. You Will 03:59
Take this embrace One to another I've been your face and you my brother All right you will All right you will This midnight lake mirror for worries That shimmer and fade before our jury All right you will All right you will Take off the reigns Take off the worry For what remains Is all right you will All right you will © 2016 Words and Music by Nicholas D. about

There is something truly incredible about an artist realizing their work in a way that is true to the way they have envisioned it as a mere idea in their head, breaking free from previous restraints or expectations and crafting something full and complete. On 'Follow the Rivulets,' Nick Drummond's debut full-length album as a solo artist, he's taken all the best parts of his previous projects and meticulously crafted songs that are fun, beautiful, sad, and inspiring. It may be a break-up album, but I think it is more accurate to think of it as an album about putting things back together.

The songs are varied in their moods and styles. Best described as a singer-songwriter, Drummond uses elements of classic American folk music and bluesy roots rock to weave lyrics and a voice that is smooth and sympathetic between a sonic landscape that is layered and complex. Each track finds its own groove, inviting the listener in to share an experience sonically, but oftentimes also pushing us to dance, wherever we may be.

The album begins with 'Roll On,' a roots-rock jam that finds Drummond flexing his vocal range while he sings about fixing his broken heart by means of the Mississippi River. The musicians Drummond has found to play with him are all excellent and this first song is packed with the energy of New Orleans, jumping along with soulful organs and percussive guitars and bass. Lyrics like "She's a pretty flower of the Veiux Carre now / Feeling frisky from the whiskey getting carried away now / Just hitting her stride when she lost her feet / ‘Cause she drank too much of the river's sheen" paint the scene as Drummond sings to the river, asking for the answer, which may just be to hold on and roll on. 'How Strange' is a summer breeze of a song with a dancing guitar riff that doesn't quit until you get up and move with it. It's a song about resilience in the face of something overwhelming, determining to find the joy in something although we all know the sentiment: "how often do we say goodbye when we know it isn't good?" The song itself, in its upbeat and airy way, proves its own thesis that "sometimes laughter does what memory and tears never could."

And then there is 'Messin' Up,' my #1 song of the year. The song begins with a not-so-simple six-string banjo riff that can embed itself in your head and you'll find yourself walking to it's persuasive rhythm. It's a song about living life to its fullest, being unprepared for whatever gets thrown your way, but going with it anyway, mistakes and all. There are beautifully dramatic piano crescendos, spiraling guitars, and a mesmerizing hang drum, that all highlight Drummond's emotional outpouring as he sings "I thought I had buried this deeply / But she flickers like a flame in the gallows / And here I thought I was swimming in the shallows." The song leads into 'Waiting for Dawn,' a beautiful track that is best described as instrumental, where the instrument is layered vocals creating a soundscape that is one of the most pleasant things you'll ever hear.

Other songs are haunting ('Whistling Wind' and 'Rivulets'), and while Drummond's lyrics often deal with heartbreak and sadness, the ways in which he crafts these songs keeps them mysterious, as a sort of journey. There is, though, one song on the album which does not attempt to mask its sadness, and it is one of the more heartbreaking songs I've heard. 'Lady Lake' finds Drummond with his voice laid bare over a fingerpicked guitar and simple heart-beat drum, singing to an ex-lover about the disappointment of losing all the promises, memories, and futures when that relationship came to an end. Finally, the song ends with, instead of a longing for, a goodbye to the Lady Lake.

'Follow the Rivulets' has it all, intriguing and nature-inspired lyrics, songs about loss and recovery, an incredibly talented line-up of musicians (Eric Robert, Oliver Franklin, Ehssan Karimi, Nathan Yaccino, and Jon Karschney are credited, along with Drummond himself handling a variety of instruments), and the attitude of an artist discovering himself in a fully realized fashion. There are constantly new things to discover, buried in the lyrics or a bit further back in the mix, and it's a perfect album for repeated listening (especially on a summer day, so keep this one in mind come July). 'Follow the Rivulets' is a journey, not running away from anything, but instead running towards it with the fullness of life and spirit, in spite of whatever setbacks may occur.
